Cold winter weather is bringing light snow to the metro area ahead of an anticipated weekend warm up. The mountains are experiencing heavier snow, which led to a brief closure of I-70, eastbound near Silverthorne because of a jacknifed semi-truck.

9News meteorologist Nick Carter says cold air racing south from Wyoming will deliver cloudy skies and snow throughout the day.

Several inches are expected in the northern and central mountains with light snow expected throughout the day in Denver. Western Jefferson and southern Douglas County will see accumulations of up to three inches of snow.

The weather has created poor driving conditions through the northern and central mountains, especially on the passes. Chain restrictions for big rigs are in place on eastbound I-70 at Vail Pass, and US 6 at Loveland Pass.

Winds are expected to increase while temperatures decrease throughout the day.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures are expected to return Friday.
