Post reporter Elana Ashanti Jefferson snapped a shot of this roadside interpretation of traditional jacal-style architecture near the edge of nowhere on the Western Slope last summer. Where is it and what is it used for? Send your guess and how you knew to coloradosunday@denverpost.com, and include a digital photo of yourself. We’ll pick one and share it next week. The best tale wins $50 in movie tickets.

HOW’D YOU KNOW?

Last week: The Muffler Man, U.S. 85 at Fifth Street in Greeley

The winners, from left: Malory Peterson, Nicki Stearns’ birthday piñata, and Meghan Mella, Greeley

The Muffler Man (a.k.a. “The Greeley Tall Man”) was first spotted by our crew on an outing to the wind farms on the Colorado/Wyoming border. It was an early April morning in ’03. The crew was shocked by the size of the gentleman watching as our vehicle sped down U.S. 85, heading north from Greeley. The wind farm was our first priority. So we decided to plan a later adventure to visit this tall man and see what he was all about.

Since this first sighting, our crew has collectively seen nine tall men throughout the United States. We love muffler men and have found many others on roadsideamerica.com, including many friends and family of the purple-shirted wonder. The crew has even held a tall man-themed birthday party for one of its founding members.
