NEWS TO YOU
The Denver
Sloan’s Lake Park
West 17th Avenue and Newton Street, Denver
Back in the day, a steamboat ran passengers who paid 25 cents each on a journey down a canal, west from around modern-day Federal Boulevard, across Sloan’s Lake to the long-gone Grand View Hotel. Who knew? Lyons artist Kristine Smock pays homage to The Denver, which steamed only during the summer of 1874, in a new public art installation that was officially unveiled earlier this month.
GOLD NUGGETS
Ruby Gold potatoes
Available in 5-pound bags at most Safeway stores
Golden yellow flesh wrapped in warm red skin translates into a beautiful bowl of spuds for the holiday table. These thin-skinned beauties are the newest potatoes to ship from the San Luis Valley under the Cañon label. He’s admittedly a bit of a homer, but Cañon Potato Co. president Jim Tonso likes Ruby Gold mashed or baked and maybe looking gorgeous in a potato salad. “It’s a little different than what you’re used to seeing.”

Maybe you can’t bring yourself to toss Junior’s first finger painting, no matter how tattered it has gotten. Make it part of the permanent family record at FMS Digital. Kathy Hadsall has perfected the process of transferring images – family photos, favored art, you choose – to individual tiles or mosaics for the tabletop, floor or backsplash.
