Aurora – The 10-year-old boy who was attacked by three pit bulls was transferred Friday out of intensive care at Denver’s Children’s Hospital, according to his aunt, Johanna Jones.

Gregg Jones still cannot talk because of a tongue injury. But he’s walking and is being more playful and ornery, Jones said.

“He’s just like any other kid his age,” she said. “But there are days he is sad and days that he is happy. He’s still weak.”

Detectives are wrapping up their investigation into the Nov. 2 incident, in which three pit bulls kept in the backyard of Gregg’s central Aurora home attacked him after he came home from school.

Neighbors heard the boy’s pleas for help and fought off the dogs with sticks and a baseball bat.

Police shot and wounded one of the dogs after it escaped. That dog was later euthanized. The two other dogs are still being held by Aurora’s Animal Care Division, awaiting a hearing.

The Aurora City Council in October approved an ordinance that bans new pit bulls and some other breeds of dogs and places strict restrictions on existing pit bulls, including requiring their owners buy a $200 annual license.

Gregg Jones was airlifted to Children’s Hospital and was in critical condition for about a week.

His left arm was amputated.

“He knows his arm is missing,” his aunt said. “He knows about the attack. He is aware. He’s getting counseling. The whole family is getting counseling. He’s doing physical therapy. He’s a real trouper. He still has multiple fractures in his face. He’s going to be (at Children’s) for a while.”
