Erik J. Skelton, a senior at ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, was recognized in August for receiving his Eagle Scout award by the Greenwood Village Police Department’s Explorer program.

Aside from being active in Boy Scouts and the Explorers, Erik has earned the Billy Mitchell Award from the Civil Air Patrol. He also helped start the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at his previous high school in Grand Junction.

Erik was selected to participate in the Colorado Rural Health Scholars Program in 2004. The program is sponsored in part by the University of Colorado to educate rural students who are interested in careers in the health sciences. Erik also has participated in and led numerous service projects through Key Club, Highlands Ranch Community Youth Council and his church youth group.

Erik is applying to the Denver Public Safety Cadet Program through the University of Colorado at Denver or Metropolitan State College of Denver. He maintains a 3.5 grade-point average and is interested in a career in public service.

Each week, The Denver Post honors an outstanding youth for his or her accomplishments.
