Mongolia
Who: Lydia Swan (age 71) and her son Randy, both of Denver
Where: Hunting camp, approximately 11,300 feet in the Altay Mountains.
Best meal: Lots of delightful restaurants, of every type, all over the capital city of Ulan Bator. Our favorite local dish, however, was a deep-fried flat pastry that is filled with spiced meat.
Best deal: If you love cashmere and camel-hair products, this is the place!
Best time to go: If you like chaos mixed with culture, go in mid-
July during their festival season. If you like green plants, go in the spring. But if you want to avoid the crowds and get to know the people better, go in the fall or winter.
Don’t leave home without: Toilet tissue, a flashlight and up-to-
date vaccinations. Decades of Soviet occupation means shabby plumbing and dodgy electrical systems.
