Denver’s Consulate General of Mexico announced today that the Mexican government has granted the extradition of Raul Gomez-Garcia, a suspect accused of killing a Denver police officer earlier this year.
Gomez-Garcia has the right to appeal the decision within the next three weeks, which could delay his return to Denver for several more months.
Gomez-Garcia is charged with second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in a shooting earlier this year killed Denver police officer Donald Young dead and injured officer John Bishop.
Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey issued a statement in response to the Mexican government’s decision.
“I am extremely pleased that the extradition order has been signed,” he said. “The process has moved forward just as we understood it would. I appreciate the work done on this case by both Mexican and American officials and am fully prepared for the next step in the process.”
