Community center underway

Laing/Village LLC has broken ground on a community and recreation facility on the southern shores of the Aurora Reservoir. The Lakehouse at Southshore will be one of several gathering places throughout the community. It will feature a cyber cafe, fitness facilities, theater room, and meeting and event rooms for residents of Southshore. The master plan for the 800-acre Southshore development includes a system of wetlands, streams and ponds and a trail network among five neighborhood districts. The community will have more than 2,600 homes.

KB Home goes upscale in Golden

KB Home is entering the upscale-home market in metropolitan Denver with a new community in Golden. Canyon View, southeast of the intersection of Colorado 93 and Golden Gate Canyon Road, will have 60 single-family homes ranging in size from 2,297 square feet to more than 3,700 square feet. Prices will start in the high $400,000s. All of the homes will be built with energy-efficient materials and will come with a 10-year KB Home limited warranty.

EPA “smart” award

Highlands Garden Village has received the national Overall Excellence in Smart Growth Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Highlands Garden Village is a 27-acre, mixed-use, mixed-income development in northwest Denver. It consists of environmentally responsible single- family homes, townhouses, market-rate and affordable senior and multifamily apartments, co-housing, and office and retail spaces in a pedestrian-friendly development that includes gardens, parks and walkways. Perry-Rose LLC and the Denver Urban Renewal Authority partnered in the redevelopment of the project, the original site of the Elitch Gardens amusement park.

Mortgage rates end 10-week climb

Rates on 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages averaged 6.28 percent last week, mortgage giant Freddie Mac reported Wednesday. That’s down sharply from the previous week’s rate of 6.37 percent, which was the highest in more than two years. The decline broke a 10-week streak of rising rates on 30-year mortgages. Rates on 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages, a popular choice for refinancing a home mortgage, averaged 5.81 percent last week, down from 5.90 percent the previous week. Below are average mortgage rates in Denver, Adams and Arapahoe counties as of Wednesday and the previous 52 weeks.
