The American Indian Movement of Colorado, including Russell Means
(on his cellphone), Professor George “Tink” Tinker (in the cowboy
hat), and Glenn Morris (speaking into the megaphone), protest outside
of the Rocky Mountain News last week. They were demanding the firing
of Vincent Carroll, the RMN editorial page editor, for writing a
column on Nov. 18th criticizing Vine Deloria Jr for “the utterly wacky
nature of some of his views”, specifically Vine’s rejection of the
Bering Land bridge theory of prehistoric migration in favor of a
belief that Indians have been in America forever. Vine Deloria, a
professor of history at CU Boulder and the author of numerous books
on Indian-white relations, died on November 13th and his funeral was
on Nov. 18th. Photo by Tim Chase.
