South America

Who: Fran and Jim Cosby of Denver

Where: The Amazon Jungle, along the Maranon River, just upstream from where it joins the Ucayali River to form the Amazon.

Best meal: The fresh piranha that we caught ourselves. We learned that more people eat piranha than piranha eat people. We also enjoyed our surprise anniversary cake presented by the crew.

Best deal: We found the best deals when shopping in the small villages along the river. Local people offered handcrafted items, and they are happy to accept American dollars.

Best time to go: Anytime. During the rainy season more land animals are available, and during the dry season more aquatic life can be seen.

Don’t leave home without: Everything you might need, because there are no “big box” stores on the Amazon. Be sure to include insect repellent, binoculars, and lots of candy for the village children.
