Managua – The San Cristobal volcano in western Nicaragua belched noxious gases and ash on Sunday, but nobody was hurt in the eruption, authorities said.

A spokesman for the Ineter territorial studies agency’s vulcanology department told EFE that the ash did not affect any of the villages on the mountain’s slopes.

The increased activity began at 8:48 a.m. (1448 GMT) and Civil Defense said that no material damage had been caused in any of the towns around the mountain, which is located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of the capital.

After the gas and ash explosion, San Cristobal’s activity level remained high throughout the morning, but it began to diminish during the afternoon.

San Cristobal, which stands 1,745 meters (5,670 feet) high, is one of Nicaragua’s active volcanoes and has registered sporadic eruptions or explosions over the past few years, authorities said.
