They seem to be multiplying. Those knee-dipping tree fairies known as telemarkers are everywhere these days, quietly fomenting their free-heeled revolution. The nation’s leading tele-vangelists have launched a tour, preaching the graceful merits of an unlocked heel at ski resorts across the West. Leslie Ross, queen telemarker and founder of Babes in the Backcountry, has joined telemark movie company Tough Guy Productions in the Total Telemark Tour, which stops at Durango Mountain Resort on Saturday. The festival offers free instruction and demo gear for adults and kids, demonstrations by seriously skilled telemark skiers, a showing of Tough Guy’s latest flick, “Sessions: Total Telemark V,” backcountry skills clinics and a party that proves true freedom starts with the heel.
