A former nurse at the Denver veterans affairs medical center has been arrested and is accused of killing an elderly patient when she disabled an oxygen monitoring machine, according to a federal indictment unsealed today.
Carol Elkins committed “gross acts of negligence,” which resulted in the death of William T. Leslie in 2003, according to the indictment. She was arraigned today on a charge of involuntary manslaughter and was released on a $25,000 bond.
Her lawyers said Elkins, who still is working as a nurse, is innocent and they would vigorously defend her.
