Poacher nabbed

Cooperative efforts among officials from Colorado and Kentucky put a notorious wildlife offender behind bars in Larimer County. Steve Herrmann, who has lived in both states, faces 12 felony counts and 42 misdemeanor counts of wildlife-related charges relating to the illegal shooting and destruction of deer, elk, antelope and an eagle, along with auto theft and burglary. Herrmann, 41, was apprehended by Kentucky authorities and extradited to Colorado. He faces $1.2 million in fines and up to 36 years in prison.

Pricey points

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will initiate a revised preference point system for nonresident hunters beginning Jan. 1. Nonresidents will have the option of purchasing a preference point that, beginning in 2007, will apply toward 75 percent of the license quota for both regular and special drawings. Preference points don’t apply for antlerless animals. Points will cost $50 for elk, $40 for deer and $30 for antelope.

Waterfowl to benefit

A partnership of Ducks Unlimited and the Canadian government will provide protection for waterfowl in that nation’s prairie pothole region. Canadian agencies have pledged $2.7 million for a science-based program that rewards farmers for protecting waterfowl habitat while also storing carbon as a hedge against greenhouse gas effects in the atmosphere. Biologists from Ducks Unlimited, which has worked on these Canadian landscapes for almost 70 years, will provide technical assistance for the projects.
