Boulder’s historic Maxwell mansion is on the market for $3.95 million, offering well-heeled history buffs a chance to own a home constructed by Boulder’s second mayor.
The home, built by J.P. Maxwell in 1906, sits on 2.2 acres of what was once a 1,600-acre spread owned by Maxwell, according to listing agent Sel Goldstein.
Seller Bart Macgillivray constructed an addition to the red-brick home in 1997, bringing the north Boulder home to 8,433 square feet with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
Unique features of the home include a secret passageway accessed through a swing-out bookcase that leads from the second floor to the attic.
There’s also a downstairs vault that has been converted into a 1,200-bottle wine cellar.
