RINGING YOUR BELL
Chime Request Line 2005
303-755-2224
Since 1979, carillonneur Robert Gift has been playing the same 10 notes, usually organized into Christmas carols, but sometimes with a team fight-song thrown in for good measure. From the 10-bell tower in Denver’s City and County building, 1437 Bannock St., beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he will play them in any order you like. Call in advance to ask for your favorite tune, or bring your cellphone and ring him up from the lawn.
EAGLES HAVE LANDED
Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR
East 56th Avenue at Havana Street, Commerce City
303-289-0930
Bald eagles are back at Rocky Mountain Arsenal for the winter. The big birds stop over at the 17,000-acre refuge between October and April, when they head back north to nesting grounds of their own. No vehicle traffic is allowed, but there are hiking trails and tram tours at 9 a.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. Sundays, during which the big raptors are almost always spied roosting in the cottonwoods.
ABOVE IT ALL
Twinkling chandelier
The Brown Palace
321 17th St., Denver
Thursday night, just as they have every year for 50 years, Denver debutantes will waltz in the atrium lobby under the historic hotel’s equally historic beaded chandelier. Formed from 12 separate arms and glittering with 42,500 lights, the ornament will cast a glow on folks taking high tea during the holidays, and in January, on the National Western Stock Show’s Grand Champion Steer.
