The Poudre Fire Authority released this transcript on Dec. 19, 2005 of a fire that killed 23-year-old Kris Kueneman and her eight-month-old daughter, Lily on July 31st. The call lasted for approximately eight minutes.

Dispatch: 911 what is the address of your emergency

Caller: Help

Dispatch: What is the address?

Caller: naa… naa.. 13, 1303 West Swallow

Dispatch: Okay. We’ve got fire department on the way. Get everybody out

of the apartment and get outside.

Caller: I can’t get of the apartment. I’m trapped.

Dispatch: What do you mean, you’re trapped. What apartment are you in?

Caller: 6D.

Dispatch: 6D, like, like David? Or B, like Boy?

Caller: D, David.

Dispatch: Okay. What, how are you trapped?

Caller: The fire’s in the stairwell and I can’t…(inaudible)

Dispatch: Okay, can you go out, there should be another exit. Is there

another exit?

Caller: No there isn’t. Um, that’s the only exit. (cough)

Dispatch: Alright. Go ahead and put a towel underneath the door so it blocks

any smoke. I’ll let them know that you’re trapped in 6D, David.

(In the background Dispatch states, “We’ve got a resident trapped.

Fire is in the stairway. She can’t get out. She’s in 6D.”)

Caller: (breathing in the background)

Dispatch: Is there any other exit out of your apartment. Stop and think.

Caller: Win, Window,

Dispatch: Stop and think.

Caller: Window

Dispatch: Okay, can you get out the window? (short pause) Can you get out

the window?

Caller: No!

Dispatch: Why can’t you get out the window?

Caller: Because… (starts crying).

Dispatch: Listen to me. You need to stop and think. Get out the window.

Break it if you have to.

Caller: Oh… oh…

Dispatch: break it if you have to

Dispatch: (In the background, “I need units to assist…

Caller: (makes inaudible sounds)

Dispatch: … the fire department at 1303 West Swallow, we’ve got a structure

Caller: (makes inaudible sounds)

Dispatch: … people trapped inside.

(background noises)

Dispatch: Did you get the window open?

Caller: (breathing sounds)

Dispatch: Maam?

Caller: (breathing sounds)

Dispatch: Did you get the window open?

Caller: (inaudible) (breathing sounds)

Dispatch: Maam? Did you get the window opened?

Caller: (breathing sounds)

Dispatch: Maam? What’s your name?

Caller: (breathing sounds)

Dispatch: What’s your name?

Dispatch: Talk to me. (short pause) Maam? Talk to me.

Caller: (breathing sounds)

Dispatch: Get to the window. Get the window open.

Caller: (breathing sounds) (sirens can be heard in the background)

Dispatch: Maam?

Dispatch: Pick up the phone!

Caller: (breathing sounds)

Dispatch: Pick up the phone. Get to the window. Open the window.

Caller: (inaudible)

Dispatch: Pick up the phone.

Dispatch: Can you hear me?

Caller: (inaudible) (moaning sounds)

Dispatch: Maam?

Caller: (moaning sounds)

Dispatch: Pick up the phone. I need you to listen.

Caller: (moaning sounds)

Dispatch: (breathing sounds)

(In the background Dispatch states: “It would be easier if you switch over to fire console and I’ll listen to channel 2.)

Caller: (moaning in the background while his conversation takes place)

(Inaudible background noises in Dispatch.)

Dispatch: Maam?

(beeping can be heard in the background)

Dispatch: Maam?

Dispatch: Hello?

(inaudible background noises)

Dispatch: Copy. If you can get to 6D, as in David and try and get a window

open or something. I’ve got a resident inside that cannot get out.

Dispatch: Hello?

Dispatch: (Breathing sound). Okay. Keep yourself safe. (To officer on radio)

Dispatch: Maam?

(inaudible, background noise)

Dispatch: Hello?

Dispatch: 6D, David.

Dispatch: Hello?

Dispatch: If you can hear me, pick up the phone.

(inaudible sounds)

Dispatch: Afirm… that’s … that’s what I got.

(fumbling sounds)

Dispatch: Maam? Pick up the phone. Get to the window. Get to the

window.

Dispatch: This lady’s still in her apartment.

(inaudible, background noises)

Dispatch: Pick up the phone if you can hear me get to a window. I’ve got

people on scene to help you. I need you to get to a window.

(car alarms and background noises)

Dispatch: Maam? (short pause) Break the window if you can.

(car alarms and background noises)

Dispatch: Break the window. Use anything you can.

(car alarms and background noises)

Dispatch: Break the window. Get something and break the window.

(car alarms and background noises, inaudible)

Dispatch: I’ve got the open phone line, but she’s not talking to me. I can hear

movement.

(car alarms and background noises)

Dispatch: I’ve got help there. Break the window. Do something.

Dispatch: Maam? (short pause) Maam?

Dispatch: Maam, pick up the phone.

(background noises, inaudible conversation)

Dispatch: Charlie 188 do you have her in sight?

(background noises)

Dispatch: Does anybody have her in sight at 6D, David?

(inaudible conversation)

Dispatch: Okay. She’s not responding to me at all.

Dispatch: This lady’s not, I can hear movement Brandy, but she’s not talking

to me in 6D. Is there anybody that can get over there. PD can’t get

to her.

(inaudible conversation)

Dispatch: Sounds like the fire department gonna be getting a ladder to her

now.

(inaudible conversation)

Dispatch: I hope.

Dispatch: Maam. If you can get to it, get to the window, there’s help for you.

(window glass breaking)

Dispatch: I heard something break.

(window glass breaking)

Dispatch: Okay, I’m hearing breaking window, so hopefully fire

department’s got to his lady.
