HORSES HAVE IT
Award named for Janowitz
Mildred Janowitz of Franktown, who has shown quarter horses at the National Western for 60 of her 87 years, was honored Sunday. Horse show manager Brad Ettleman said the Janowitz Award will be given each year to the person who shows the highest-point-
getting Western pleasure palomino.
Janowitz specializes in breeding and showing palominos and once provided some of the dark-blond beauties for Marlboro tobacco ads.
FREESTYLE REINING
Bareback rider wins $15,000
Aaron Ralston of Silt won the $15,000 Dodge Invitational Freestyle Reining contest Sunday with his bareback rendition of rodeo cowboy.
The event combines the spins and sliding stops of reining – moves that a cow horse must do in ranch work – with costumes, lighting, props and music.
Other top reiners contributing to the event included Guy Vernon of Kiowa, with his salute to his wife; Drake Johnson of Wray, who dedicated his performance in memory of his sister; Josh Armstrong of New Mexico, with a bridleless chimney-
sweep act; and last year’s winner, Pete Kyle of Texas, who coaxed his horse into a whirling spin while he sat with his arms crossed on his chest without reins.
THE COWBOY WAY
Art award
Lewis “Pete” Douglas of Denver is the recipient of the 2006 Mary Belle Grant Award from the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale. The award honors a person who embodies the spirit of the Western way of life and symbolizes the passion of the West through art.
Mary Belle Grant was one of the creators and early visionaries of the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale. She served on the advisory committee and was a patron.
This is the first time the award has been given to a volunteer rather than an artist. Douglas not only has increased the show’s sponsorship dollars but also has boosted the show’s recognition within the art world, helping make it one of the premier Western art shows in the nation.
The 14th annual Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale runs through Jan. 22 on the third floor of the National Western Exposition Hall. There are more than 200 works from 53 artists.
