Who: Barbara Judson, Golden. Husband, daughter, and son-in- law are also in the Land Rover, along with our ranger and tracker. All would have been in the photograph; however, if you stand up or move too quickly, the lion may consider you the best meal in South Africa!
Where: Sabi Sand Game Reserve, just west of Kruger National Park.
Best time to go: For game viewing September through October is the best time to go because it is early spring, and animals are better seen without full foliage in the bush.
Best meal: Any meal dining al fresco under the magical African sky after a day of game viewing. However, the perfectly ripe local produce, ostrich filet, smoked warthog, and kudu steak with amarula sauce are most memorable.
Best deal: Stopping for sundowners (cocktails!) at sunset in the bush in the midst of a heard of majestic elephant.
Don’t leave home without: Sturdy shoes, khaki or natural-colored clothing, a hat and small gifts for the lodge guides and staff .
