Get lost, King Kong, – Denver is ready to go ape over Lannie “Lan’ Mine o’ Love” Garrett’s new venue, Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, opening Jan. 27 in the D&F Tower.
Her promotional postcard, mailed Friday, shows a giant Garrett dressed as Patsy Kong, holding on to the top of the D&F Tower, biplanes attacking her.
Garrett’s run in the historic tower’s basement opens with the “Patsy DeCline Show,” her spoof of a washed-up country singer. For seven months out of the year, she’ll rotate her revues, such as “Any Swing Goes” with a 10-piece band; “Under Paris Skies,” with the incredible Gypsy Swing Revue; “‘S Wonderful,” a George Gershwin tribute; and “Screen Gems,” a musical tribute to Hollywood.
Garrett will perform the “Patsy” show Wednesday through Saturday nights through April 29. On Tuesday nights, partner Jefferson Alca will run a Retro Vaudeville Variety Night – with everyone from singers to jugglers, comedians and magicians. On Garrett’s off-weeks, look for national acts.
The room, which most recently held the Rattlebrain Theater, has been totally remodeled by edgy Denver artist Lonnie Hanzon.
There’s nothing like this in Denver. Nuttin’ honey. “I’m pinching myself,” Garrett says. “My birthday is Jan. 22, and this is the best present ever.”
Gotta have Hart
Former U.S. Sen. Gary Hart was interviewed in last week’s N.Y. Times Magazine. He’s looking trim, and his hair is a little shorter than it usually looks on the 16th Street Mall.
Was he feeling bitter these days?
“It’s not my nature to feel bitter. I’ve been away from Washington for 19 years. Mostly I talk to my neighbors in Kittredge, Colo., real Americans, not Jack Abramoff. I am an outdoorsman. I take hikes with my dog, Winston.”
Can Hart, who has accepted a teaching position at CU-Denver, stay calm about events in Washington?
“I don’t. I go out and kick trees. I don’t hug them, I kick them.”
Foxy
Cherry Creek North is buzzing that Sam Fox, owner of the popular North restaurant on Clayton Lane, is thisclose to taking over another Cherry Creek restaurant.
Fox talked to me about expanding in Cherry Creek at a party during December. Now it looks like he will. Not another North, but a different kind of joint through his successful Fox Restaurant Concepts.
Fox was unavailable for comment by press time. Fox flack Wendy Aiello had “no comment.” Other principals in the rumored deal did not return calls.
