4-H DAY
Giveaways, Catch-a-Calf
Today is full of special events at the stock show in honor of the 4-H Club, which is overseen in Colorado by Colorado State University’s Cooperative Extension Service.
The CSU booth will have 4-H stickers, bracelets and bookmarks. The 2 p.m. rodeo will feature the Catch-a-Calf contest, a stock show tradition since 1935. In it, 4-H’ers and a few calves are turned loose. The child who catches and halters a calf takes it home as a 4-H project, and he or she then brings it back to show next year.
Q&A
C.C. Collier, a country musician and recording artist, has been performing at the National Western Stock Show for 17 years.
Today and Thursday, Collier will perform on the “open stage” in the Cowboy Experience Hall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Q: Where did you grow up? Who were your influences? How did you get involved in country music?
A: I grew up in a little town called Ignacio, on the Southern Ute reservation. My influence was a Hispanic guitarist named Joe Herrera, who also was out of Ignacio. I started trying to follow his example, that’s how I got started.
Q: What keeps you coming back to the National Western after all these years?
A: It’s No. 1 for what they do for the state of Colorado, which is bringing so much revenue into the state. Also, you can start from the highest level and go down the chain of command and they are just down-to-earth, great people. They are traditional, and that is what I play, traditional country music.
