As the days dwindle to a precious few for Colorado’s waterfowl season, skill and stealth become increasingly important. Although populations of migratory birds generally have been good through much of eastern Colorado, a hunter’s task often becomes more difficult near season’s end.

The reason: Smart birds. Whether they wear fur or feathers, animals rather quickly become attenuated to the habits of hunters. They learn the places that are not safe, even to the point of recognizing subtle changes in topography and vegetation.

Camouflage, along with attention to motion, takes on added importance. So, too, does choosing an advantageous weather situation – which is where the dilemma deepens for duck hunters. Just four days remain in a Central Flyway duck season that ends Sunday, leaving precious little wiggle room in that selection process. For western Colorado, hunting ends for both ducks and geese Jan. 29.

Regular goose season continues through Feb. 12 in eastern Colorado, followed by the special hunt for the even more difficult snow geese Feb. 18-April 30 east of Interstate 25.
