Federated Department Stores Inc. in August will close an Aurora distribution center employing 150 people, the company said Thursday.

The 291,000-square-foot center at 21303 33rd Drive in Aurora was owned by May Department Stores Co., which Cincinnati- based Federated acquired last year. The company is closing five of 31 distribution centers as a result of the acquisition.

A company spokeswoman did not return a message Thursday.

The company said in a statement that employees laid off as a result of the closing will receive severance.

“It’s just part of the ebb and flow of business. Contractions occur, but so do expansions,” said Dick Hinson, vice president of the Aurora Economic Development Council.

He said that while the closing is unfortunate, the city added 600 jobs recently when Broomfield-based Corporate Express decided to consolidate its customer-service call center.
