CSU shows off its chemistry

Saturday at the Colorado State University booth at the stock show, members of the chemistry club will be on hand to demonstrate through experiments how chemistry fits into everyday life.

They will make slime, power a fan with a liquid battery and create a “clock” out of rainbow colors, among other things.

The booth is in the southeast corner of the third floor of the Exposition Hall at the National Western Complex.

STOCK SHOW SENATOR

Bye, Capitol; hello, rodeo …

It’s no choice for state Sen. Tom Wiens, R-Castle Rock.

Today the senator will be at the National Western with about 140 elementary school students from Larkspur Elementary in Douglas County and Watch Care Academy in Denver.

“This is a tremendous way for children (to) learn more about a great Colorado tradition during the 100th anniversary of the National Western,” Wiens said in a statement.

The agenda includes a tour, the petting zoo and a matinee rodeo.

STAR STEER

Brown Palace hosts the champ

The 2006 Grand Champion Steer will be on display in the Brown Palace Hotel today during afternoon tea.

The tradition started in 1945 when Don Thornton, a rancher from Gunnison, arranged to show his Herefords there. (Thornton went on to be governor, 1951-55).

The Brown continued the tradition, and every year, the winner of the Junior Livestock Auction takes his place on a pen of straw to be viewed and photographed before he is auctioned off that night.
