Tsingtao

Chinese New Year starts Sunday. It is the Year of the Dog, and people born under its sign are said to possess “the best traits of human nature.”

They can celebrate their traits and the new year with Tsingtao (“ching-dow”), the No. 1 beer in China and in most Chinese restaurants.

Tsingtao is the Budweiser of China – it’s big and it’s everywhere. In fact, since April 2005, Anheuser-Busch, maker of Budweiser, has held a 27 percent stake in Tsingtao.

In style, though Tsingtao is a German pilsner it lacks the forward hoppiness of its European counterparts, but still more noticeable than Bud. Its refreshing taste and mingling of flavors make it an ideal accompaniment for Chinese food.

Drawback: It’s packaged in green bottles, not the best for protecting flavors on the journey from China.

Tsingtao is available throughout Colorado in six-packs ($7.49) and 22-ounce bottles.
