And then there was none.

Seemingly without warning, the 2005-06 season came to an end for the Broncos, and with it ended my status as an NFL rookie. As the final moments ticked off the game clock Sunday, the reality began to set in that the Pittsburgh Steelers would be going to Detroit as the AFC representatives in Super Bowl XL, and our chance to compete for the title of world champions was gone.

From the first day of training camp, we all fully expected to play on the biggest stage in sports, the Super Bowl, and we were constantly striving to reach that goal. Undoubtedly the 2005-2006 season was a great run, both for me as a first-year player and for the Broncos in establishing ourselves as an AFC power.

After the game Sunday, coaches, friends and family members were full of congratulatory remarks, commenting on what a great season we had and how much I had accomplished as a rookie. But I have never been satisfied with “almost.” Good is never good enough.

Getting this close to Detroit was bittersweet. However, I appreciated the statements made by those around me, and I know each to be true. Reflecting on the season, and my first year in the Mile High City, I realize what a blessing it is to be standing where I am.

I have had the good fortune to become involved with the surrounding community through various service events. I have studied under the watch of some of the NFL’s greatest players and coaches. I have been embraced and made my home in the welcoming city of Denver. I have been a member of the most initially underrated and finally heralded Broncos. And I have had the pleasure of sharing my thoughts each week with the readers of my Denver Post rookie journal.

While I will never be satisfied until I don a Super Bowl ring, I can sincerely say that all in all, this season has been a great one.
