The Broncos will likely officially have a replacement for Gary Kubiak in the coming days.
The hiring of former Tennessee Titans and New York Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger will take a step closer to becoming official Monday when Heimerdinger is set to meet with coach Mike Shanahan. Heimerdinger is likely to become the Broncos’ offensive coordinator soon after.
Heimerdinger, a former Broncos receivers coach under close friend Shanahan, was released from his contract as the Jets’ offensive coordinator Wednesday after nearly a week of negotiating.
There are other offensive coordinator positions open around the league, and it has been speculated that Detroit would like to talk to Heimerdinger.
But it’s clear Denver is the likely destination for him.
Heimerdinger and Shanahan were college roommates at Eastern Illinois University and remain close.
Heimerdinger was a receivers coach for Shanahan before becoming the Titans’ offensive coordinator from 2000-04.
Kubiak became head coach of the Houston Texans on Thursday.
Talks begin
The Broncos and the agent for free-agent center Tom Nalen had preliminary talks Friday and the sides will continue conversations in the coming weeks.
