The Wichita Thunder defeated the Colorado Eagles 3-2 after 10 shootout rounds in Central Hockey League action Saturday at the Kansas Coliseum. Wichita’s Ben Murphy beat Colorado goalie Jeff Blair for his first professional goal and the game winner. The Eagles came back from a 2-0 deficit and outshot the Thunder 42-23, but they failed to score on six power-play opportunities.

Falcons open baseball season with sweep

Air Force began its 50th baseball season by sweeping a doubleheader with Colorado Christian, a team in its inaugural year, winning 5-1 and 2-1 at Falcon Field.

In the first game, Mitch Brown earned the win for Air Force, striking out 11 hitters and allowing one hit in seven shutout innings. Chay Derbigny went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Falcons.

In the second game, Air Force’s Kyle DePierre and Paul Vignola combined to allow one run on eight hits.

CSU doubles up at AFA track and field meet

Colorado State’s track and field team swept the men’s and women’s team titles after the final day of the Air Force Invitational.

The CSU men won with 141.50 points, followed by Colorado with 125 and Air Force with 115.

The Rams women’s team took top honors with 181.50 points, followed by Arizona State with 127 and Wyoming with 66.

In the men’s 5,000-meter run, freshman Logan Sherman beat out four Air Force runners who finished in the top five to claim the event in 15:45.70.

In the women’s 1-mile run, CSU placed five runners in the top eight, with freshman Chantelle Dron winning with a time of 5 minutes, 4.23 seconds.

DU gymnasts sweep AFA for fourth straight

The 16th-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team swept all four events, scoring season highs on three, and defeated Air Force in a dual meet at Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneers scored 196.150 points to Air Force’s 176.500. Denver’s Heather Huffaker won her fourth all-around title of the season with a score of 39.375. Denver has won four consecutive meets.
