Search teams scoured a rugged area of Boulder County between Lyons and Estes Park into the night Saturday, but found only a pair of sunglasses that might belong to a missing camper.
A friend reported Shaun Green missing Friday afternoon, after he didn’t show up at a rendezvous site.
The friend told authorities she dropped the 23-year-old Loveland man off Thursday and agreed to return at noon Friday to pick him up.
The friend, who officials have not identified, told investigators that she waited more than two hours for Green, who had planned to camp alone. When he didn’t show up, she went to Lyons to call her mother for advice, said Dave Booton, emergency services supervisor for the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department.
The woman went back to the site, waited a few more hours and then notified authorities that Green was missing. The Sheriff’s Department launched an initial search Friday evening.
Saturday, up to 45 searchers, on foot, on horseback and on all-terrain vehicles, were assisted by search dogs as they combed the area where Green had planned to camp, Booton said.
Green had clothes and food with him, Booton said. However, he said the Big Elk Meadow area where the search is concentrated is “especially steep and rugged.”
Booton said some searchers reported spotting mountain lions in the area, “so that’s a concern as well.”
Booton said the search will be expanded today.
