An attorney for one of the women attacked a year ago by convicted sex offender Brent J. Brents filed suit against the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, alleging his client’s rights were abused by the agency’s failure to make a timely arrest.
Brents is serving life in an out-of-state prison, but the lawsuit says the DA failed when an arrest warrant went unsigned for more than two months. Brents had admitted to the police that he had inappropriately touched a boy, which attorneys say should have been enough to make an arrest because Brents was a convicted sex offender.
Denver attorney Will Hood filed the suit Monday evening.
Hood’s 49-year-old client, who is using the name Jane Doe, is one of the four women who filed their intent to sue both the DA and the Aurora Police Department. Those women last week reached a deal with the city of Aurora, whose officials have promised to pay $240,000 to the four women. But the DA’s office hasn’t been able to reach a similar deal because of lack of funds, according to DA Carol Chambers.
Hood’s suit names the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Chambers and former DA Jim Peters. Chambers took over office in January 2005.
