Colorado State golfer Derrick Whiting survived a four- man, three-hole playoff Tuesday to win the Rice Intercollegiate tournament in Missouri City, Texas. Whiting, a junior from Alexandria, Minn., qualified for the playoff with rounds of 72, 77 and 70, a 9-over-par 219 total.
CSU finished second in the 14-team field, five strokes behind Santa Clara. Rice finished third. The individual runner-up was Brian Grossman of Stephen F. Austin.
