Matt Holliday’s rocket ride from pedestrian Double-A prospect to major league slugger continued Tuesday, confirming he has joined closer Brian Fuentes on the United States’ final 30-man roster for the inaugural World Baseball Classic.

“It’s pretty cool. When some of the first names came out, I didn’t think I had a chance,” the 26-year-old Holliday said. “I can’t wait. It’s given me an extra burst in my workouts.”

Holliday, who drove in 64 runs after the All-Star break last year, was a late addition to the preliminary roster then became an important right-handed bat once Astros outfielder Lance Berkman bowed out with an injury. Fuentes was told a few weeks ago that he would be on the team, his ability to produce strikeouts and match up against left-handers considered invaluable in a short tournament.

“I don’t know if it’s all set in, from making the All-Star team to this,” Fuentes said Tuesday. “It’s a honor.”

Others who confirmed they are the U.S.’s final roster include Atlanta’s Jeff Francoeur and Chipper Jones. Holliday and Fuentes will report to Team USA on March 2 in Phoenix, with their first WBC game set for March 7 against Mexico at Chase Field.
