BECAUSE YOU ASKED

Q: Why are there no guardrails on Red Mountain Pass?

A: There is some guardrail. However, most of the roadway has no shoulder, vertical drop-offs and no place to physically install a guardrail. Also, the issue of snow removal makes it even more complicated since plowers need to be able to push the snow off the road and cannot when a guardrail is there, or there needs to be a shoulder for snow storage.

Q: What is legal when you are at a stoplight in the left-turn lane and you go through several cycles of lights, but your turn lane arrow never turns green? With the advent of red-light cameras, are you going to get fined for making a turn? Should you try backing up and try to get the sensor to trip? What if several cars are behind you?

A: Yes, you will get fined if the light stays red and you make a turn. A sensor will go off, and the camera will be activated. If you pull too far forward, it is possible the light may stay red. If the light is not cycling, it could be a malfunction of the light and should be reported. If possible, try making a right turn. The use of the cameras is determined at the local, not state, level, so not all municipalities use them.
