Aurora Public Schools Superintendent Bob Adams announced his retirement Wednesday.
“This was a hard decision,” Adams said in a statement. “But it is time to refocus on my family and our future.”
Adams has served as superintendent of the Aurora Public School District for the past five years; his retirement will become effective on June 30.
“We wish him well,” said APS board president Matt Cook. “He’s been a great asset for us.”
The Aurora Public School District has 32,000 students in 42 schools. It has struggled with performance levels at many schools. Of the district’s four high schools, overall academic performance on state assessments in 2004-05 were low for Aurora Central and Hinkley high schools, while Gateway and Rangeview high schools rated average, according to the Colorado Department of Education.
The area has faced rapid growth, and some Aurora developers have proposed a network of specialized schools.
Aurora’s school board will meet next Thursday to plan a strategy for recruiting the next school superintendent, Cook said.
