Referees ruined big day

NFL referees have brought themselves down to the same level as figure skating judges – last Sunday’s Super Bowl was fixed as every effort was made to make it a day for Jerome Bettis.

Figure skating officials decided Michelle Kwan must be in the Olympics. She didn’t qualify, but because of her name, they dropped someone who did qualify and added Kwan.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue better review the officiating of those referees. The first Seattle touchdown was a TD and a flag should not have been thrown. The TD given to Ben Roethlisberger in the second quarter never touched the line. What a farce.

It is becoming obvious the NFL has become so influenced by ESPN and Eastern sportswriters that West Coast teams get little respect.

Let’s have some unbiased referees for the next Super Bowl.

Harry H. Berting, Broomfield

An exclusive club

My son will be graduating in May, then heading off to college. He wants to major in coaching and sports management. Any tips on how he might join the fraternity where, no matter if you win or lose, you’ll always have a job? You know, the one that includes Dan O’Dowd and Clint Hurdle in its membership.

Chris LaDage, Parker

Gradishar slighted again

Having been a Broncos fan since 1961, I am perplexed by Gary Zimmerman not being selected to the Hall of Fame.

Even more outrageous, though, is the fact Randy Gradishar is not there. There seems to be a prejudice against him – a player who dominated games and his position for a decade, one of the classiest individuals ever, the heart and soul of the Orange Crush defense, 200 tackles in a season, multiple Pro Bowls, NFL defensive player of the year! Does the selection committee think he doesn’t belong because he wasn’t on a winning Super Bowl team? If that is the case, how many members of the Hall fail that test? How about Warren Moon? I guess the Broncos during the Gradishar era, in “that dusty little cow town” didn’t deserve any consideration from the Eastern media. What an injustice and a travesty!

Gene Orr, Durango

White not deserving

I would like to congratulate five out of the six people who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The only one I am not congratulating is Reggie White. The way he carried himself off the field was a disgrace, and his induction into the Hall of Fame is a slap in the face to all gay and lesbian football fans such as myself. Pete Rose is banned from baseball’s Hall of Fame for off-field issues; why not Reggie White in football? White’s nickname should be changed from Minister of Defense to Minister of Hate.

Thomas J. Foster, Aurora
