Aurora police say a 7-year-old boy brought a semi-automatic weapon to school today.
The boy attends Tollgate Elementary School at 701 S. Kallispell Way.
Police say the boy showed the gun during the morning to other students, then placed it in his backpack and went to class.
Before the lunch recess, the boy put it in his coat pocket and took it back to the schoolyard, according to police.
Police believe other students handled the gun and one of them dropped it onto the ground. Then two other boys picked it up and buried it in the sand. School officials were alerted and the gun was recovered safely.
The gun is a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. Police say the boy is too young to be held criminally liable for possesion of the gun, but an investigation is underway into how the boy obtained it.
They believe the boy may have gotten hold of it Sunday, while visiting his mother. The boy lives with his grandmother.
