Turin (or Torino) – It’s not uncommon for English-speaking foreign visitors who come to Italy to be confused when they see the city name Torino. In English-speaking countries, the city is known as Turin.
As the 2006 Winter Games have brought the city to the front of the sporting world’s consciousness, readers have asked us about the two names.
The Post has decided to use the Anglicized word: Turin. NBC is using “Torino” in its coverage, as is USA Today. The Associated Press and most American newspapers are using “Turin.”
The head of the Games organizing committee, Valentino Castelliani, told The AP he was OK with either word.
“We are not offended if you call us Turin,” he said, adding he hopes the Games will bring world travelers to Torino – or Turin, whatever they call it.
