Glenwood Springs’ grand old Hotel Colorado announced plans this week for a $2 million facelift.
Centennial-based Ricca Newmark Design will oversee the renovation, which includes moving the hotel’s restaurant and upgrading its lobby, lounge and kitchen.
“The idea is to bring it back up to its past grandeur,” said Jeff Isbister, the hotel’s food and beverage director. “The whole face of the valley is changing because of Aspen and Vail, so there is a need to upgrade what we do.”
First opened in 1893, the 130-room, privately owned hotel is managed by Denver-based Providence Hospitality Partners. Renovations will begin in early April and are expected to be completed by the end of July.
Glenwood’s hotel market has improved in recent years, according to Mike Stein, vice president of Englewood-based Hospitality Real Estate Counselors.
“Whereas Glenwood used to be purely a summer destination, it is becoming more popular year-round,” he said. “The hotel market there is definitely getting stronger.”
