Who: Fred and Susan Forman of Denver and Breckenridge; the “poler” is Robson, our guide on this Overseas Adventure Travel Tour.

Where: In a makoro (sort of a canoe) about to take a “cruise” on the Khwai River in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana.

Best meals: Surprisingly fabulous breakfasts and dinners at all four lodges we stayed at, but the best was at Linkwasha Lodge in Huange National Park in Zimbabwe.

Best deal: “Walk with the Pride” in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. For $95 per person (full breakfast included) we spent an hour walking with three 12-month-old lion cubs and were able to touch one of them.

Best time to go: Although December is rainy season, the animals all have their babies then. Also, the views of Victoria Falls are better (less spray) than in their winter (our summer). It takes more work to see the animals in the rainy season (they are more scattered), but in a way that was also a plus, as it turned us into animal trackers.

Best travel tip: See a good travel doctor well before going for shots and malaria medication. Take clothing with insect repellent already embedded.
