Sun Belt salutes DU star’s defense
University of Denver senior center Yemi Nicholson was named the Sun Belt Conference defensive player of the year in men’s basketball Wednesday after leading the Pioneers to a second-place finish in the West Division.
Nicholson was named to the all-Sun Belt team with averages of 19.8 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots.
Lafayette College freshman guard Andrew Brown, a graduate of Heritage High School, was named to the Patriot League all-rookie team. Brown is averaging 11.9 points.
DU coach receives national honor
Denver men’s lacrosse coach Jamie Munro was named coach of the week by US Lacrosse, the sport’s national governing body. Munro led DU to an 11-8 upset of North Carolina on Sunday and a 19-2 rout of Manhattan on Saturday.
Mines reconstructs football staff
Curt Lessman, formerly an assistant at Northwest Missouri State, was hired as offensive line coach at Colorado Mines, Orediggers football coach Bob Stitt announced.
Stitt also promoted Jason Koltz to assistant head coach and Jason Muñoz to offensive coordinator.
