Fire forces evacuation of 80 at East Colfax Avenue motel

The Royal Host Motel at East Colfax Avenue and Ogden Street was evacuated Sunday night after a fire broke out on the second floor about 9:30.

There were about 80 guests and employees in the building at the time, said Denver Fire Department spokesman Lt. Phil Champagne. There was considerable “pandemonium and confusion,” he said, and two people were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Champagne said firefighters assisted several people in evacuating from the upper floors and the roof. The 36 firefighters on the scene had the fire out in about 20 minutes.

He said there was extensive damage on the second floor, and the Red Cross was assisting about 35 people.

BOULDER

Gun may have started Boulder canyon fire

The Left Hand Canyon fire that raged for two hours in Boulder County on Saturday was probably caused by a person firing a gun, authorities said.

Authorities are trying to identify who the shooter could have been and determine whether a crime was committed.

The fire began about 5 miles northwest of Boulder at about 2:30 p.m. in an area known as the “shooting park,” which is popular among recreational-firearm enthusiasts.

DENVER

Man found bleeding along South Platte

A man was found bleeding, possibly after being stabbed, near the South Platte River near Park Avenue West on Sunday afternoon, Denver police said.

A passer-by called police about 1:38 p.m. and said there was a man bleeding and lying half in the river and half on the embankment.

Paramedics took the man to Denver Health Medical Center, said police spokeswoman Virginia Quiñones.

The man’s name and condition were not immediately available.

ELLICOTT

Wildfire that burned 35 acres under control

A wildfire in Ellicott, east of Colorado Springs, scorched about 35 acres, a couple of cars and two storage sheds Sunday before firefighters got the blaze under control.

The fire broke out about 12:40 p.m. on a ranch near the intersection of Ellicott and Falcon highways.

Ellicott Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ed Corn said the rancher was burning some items in a barrel and the fire got out of control, sparking the larger blaze.

Twenty-nine people from six different fire departments showed up to fight the blaze. It was controlled about 1:15 p.m., but not before it stretched across two or three properties and destroyed two outbuildings used for storage, a pile of building materials and two cars.

JEFFERSON COUNTY

Motorcyclist struck, then run over in road

The Colorado State Patrol is looking for witnesses to a hit-and-run accident on U.S. 40 near Heritage Square in Jefferson County on Saturday just before midnight, said Sgt. Jeff Goodwin.

A 54-year-old Golden motorcycle rider whose name wasn’t immediately released was critically injured in the accident, Goodwin said.

The victim was thrown from his motorcycle in the accident and ended up lying in the roadway, and “another vehicle came across the body and (the driver), maybe didn’t see it and also ran over him,” Goodwin said. “We believe it was an accident.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the patrol at 303-239-4501.
