Rick Lopez of Denver advanced out of the preliminary round at the U.S. boxing championships in Colorado Springs, winning a 33-22 decision over Zachelus Watkins of Atlanta in the 119-pound weight class.
Also advancing was John Franklin of Colorado Springs, who squeaked out a 12-11 decision over Mohammad Siddiqui of Buda, Texas, in the 112-pound division.
Priscilla Bonnell of Colorado Springs lost her 125-pound match, 13-5 to Jennifer Han of El Paso.
