Who: Matt and Bev Stutzman of Olathe

Where: Castles at Hunedoara

Best meal: The best way to truly experience Romanian culture is to eat meals in homes of the natives. The food is excellent, lots of soups and bread. They are very hospitable, glad to have you and won’t let you leave hungry!

Best deal: Beautiful European-style handwork, warm fuzzy blankets and other great souvenirs at the markets in Caransebes and Timisoara. Also, small shops along the road offer good deals on smaller items such as vases and coffee mugs.

Best time to go: Summer. In June and July it will be warmer and prettier. Winter is drearier and colder, but the country is beautiful any time of year.

Best travel tip: Go prepared for rain and mud – take waterproof shoes or boots and coats, especially if you plan to go during the winter. You definitely need a converter (220V-110V) for any electronics you take. Also, any knowledge of Romanian will be helpful; a lot of Romanians don’t speak English.
