Dallas – Ricardo Patton will return next season as head of the CU men’s basketball program.

“I’m not going to make a change; Ricardo is our basketball coach. He’s our coach,” CU athletic director Mike Bohn told The Denver Post on Thursday during the evening session of the Big 12 Tournament’s first round.

Earlier, Bohn watched fifth-seeded CU rally from a nine-point deficit in the second half to defeat Baylor 65-61.

“Ricardo really did a nice job of maintaining his composure when the team was struggling,” Bohn said.

Bohn said he will discuss a contract extension with Patton after CU’s season concludes. Patton’s contract, which includes an annual salary of $565,103, is due to expire after the 2006-07 season. Patton is 177-138 overall in his 10th full season.

On Thursday, Colorado reached 20 victories for only the fourth time in school history, three times under Patton.

Bohn said he had not announced that Patton would return because he did not want to distract the team and saw no need.

“I thought it was pretty obvious,” Bohn said.
