Former Colorado Gov. Roy Romer is expected to endorse fellow Democrat Bill Ritter for governor Sunday.

Ritter’s campaign confirmed Romer’s backing after it sent e-mails to supporters today announcing the public 2 p.m. Sunday event.

Romer, the last Democrat to serve as governor in the state, appointed Ritter as Denver District Attorney in 1993. Romer, 77, also served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee both before and after he left public office in 1999.

Last month, Romer announced that he would step down as superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District as soon as a replacement could be found. He was first appointed in June 2000.

Ritter is the sole Democrat running for governor. He is expected to face either Bob Beauprez or Marc Holtzman, both Republicans, in the November election.
