We say any town with at least one great museum and one great place to eat is worth checking out. And those two elements make Berthoud a solid stop along U.S. 287. These days, the old town is getting squeezed by development, new houses abound, and commercial buildings are on the way, but Berthoud is doing its best to keep its Colorado charm, and where it succeeds is in the offerings along the main drag, Mountain Avenue. Check it out on the first Friday night of the month, when the local observatory at the Little Thompson Pioneer Museum opens to the public, or on Thursdays when shops keep their doors open a little bit later.
