The war in Iraq

Re: “Bush admits war’s cloud,” March 22 news story.

So, the cat is out of the bag. We have heard it from our president’s own lips. For at least three more years our country will be in a war without end. Three more years of our precious young people getting killed or maimed. Three more years of expenditures of more than a billion dollars a week to democratize the Middle East. Three more years of our school, roads and other of our nation’s infrastructure going to wreck and ruin because of the diversion of money to pay for a war that was based on false information. The parts of the world that dislike us must be pleased to see our country bankrupting itself and sacrificing the lives of our young people.

Virginia L. Wielgot, Aurora

In his press conference Tuesday, President Bush actually said that Democrats were against any terrorist surveillance program. He contemptuously advised Democrats to say, “Vote for me. I promise we’re not going to have a terrorist surveillance program.” All Democrats, including the outspoken Sen. Russ Feingold, do support wiretapping of possible foreign terrorists, but they want it done legally, as required by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Most reasonable people just want the administration to follow the law requiring warrants before wires are tapped.

Colorado caucuses

Re: “GOP caucus attendance thin, but passionate,” March 22 news story.

I was disappointed that your article about caucus attendance focused only on the Republican caucuses. You may have found a more interesting story had you come to the Democratic caucuses. The Douglas County Democrats worked very hard to get the word out about the caucuses through mailings, phone calls and old-fashioned pavement pounding. Here in the very Republican area of Highlands Ranch, our caucuses were better attended than in 2004. This is quite an accomplishment for a mid-term election year.

Caucuses are just the beginning of the fun. I encourage all, whether Republican or Democrat, to get involved. This is your country, your democracy, and whether you want to show your support for the current administration or throw them all out, there is no better time than now to get involved.

Air Force Academy

Evangelicals and others want religion to have a prominent voice in public places. Goings-on at the Air Force Academy show how power-seekers like them prefer to use the sizable amount of tax dollars paid to influence believers in other religious denominations. Evangelicals proceed to usurp captive student audiences in order to excessively and improperly proselytize. Even AFA chaplains have been so used.

Their way of religion or their beliefs are not the fault. The fault lies in their outrageous, unconstitutional, demagogic behavior shown to minorities. Their football coach’s conduct and the chaplains’ conduct are way over the line.

Evangelicals know how unconstitutional their conduct is. The AFA general in charge is afraid of the federal military higher-ups and has only given AFA command a slap on the wrist.

It is sad that comments such as these must be said publicly. The encroachment, however, must be stopped.
