The Northern Colorado baseball team avoided a series sweep by defeating Brigham Young 11-7 on Saturday at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo, Utah. The Bears (8-16) ended a four-game losing streak with its first win against BYU (9-14) in two seasons.

UNC’s Seth Tartler hit a leadoff home run in the first inning and was a double short of hitting for the cycle. Zach Harris led UNC, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while Kevin Sandberg added two hits and three RBIs. Eric Maydew got the win in relief, striking out three over four innings of work. BYU beat UNC 4-3 on Thursday and 3-2 in 10 innings Friday.

Led by Jordan Bruns’ three hits and three RBIs and pitcher Matt Huff’s 12 strikeouts, Regis swept a doubleheader from Nebraska-Kearney, 8-4 and 7-6.

Bruns hit a two-RBI double and Dan Kozloski drove in his 40th and 41st runs of the season to lead the Rangers in the first game. In the second game, Regis (18-12) scored four runs in the fifth inning and held on for the win. Huff (6-2) pitched six innings and allowed six hits.

Utah skier tops U.S. freeskiing telemark event

Dylan Crossman of Salt Lake City, the only skier from outside of Colorado among the top five, led the men’s division after the first day of the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Telemark Championships at Crested Butte.

Crested Butte’s Colin MacMillan and Gunnison’s Gabe Robbins rounded out the top three.

In the women’s division, Crested Butte’s Janae Pritchett stands in first place, followed by Sarah Light of Whitefish, Mont., and Martha Burley of Fernie, British Columbia.

UMBC men’s lacrosse tops host Denver

The University of Maryland-Baltimore County men’s lacrosse team held off a late Denver rally for an 11-8 victory over the Pioneers at Barton Stadium.

Denver (4-2), ranked No. 11 in the nation, got three goals from Todd Ruport, but the Pioneers could not overtake UMBC (3-3) after trailing 6-5 at halftime.

Will Meister and Kevin Crumrine had five points each to lead Air Force to a 10-5 victory over visiting St. John’s at Cadet Stadium.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Falcons (4-4), who are undefeated at home this season. St. John’s (2-4) had a 1-0 advantage early, but did not lead again.
