Three Fort Collins bands will showcase the widespread influence of The Man in Black at “Love for Cash,” a Johnny Cash tribute show Tuesday at the Aggie Theater. Eric Noble of Loyal Family productions out of St. Louis is promoting the show, but the three acts scheduled are all local talent. Noble hopes to promote similar tribute shows in the future.
“Johnny Cash has influenced a wide range of musical styles,” said Noble, which explains the diverse lineup of the bands. “White Water Ramble and Wildwood Holler both have more of a bluegrass sound, and they’ll be doing some different arrangements of Johnny Cash tunes along with their own music. And Prism is more of a dance or electro band, so they’ll be taking some of the melodic aspects of Johnny Cash songs and intertwining them with techno.”
Purists may not dig the idea of a dance interpretation of “Folsom Prison Blues,” but you can expect plenty of straight-up covers during the show as well. Wildwood Holler kicks off the show, followed by Prism and headliners White Water Ramble. $6, 8 p.m., 204 S. College Ave, Fort Collins, 970-482-8300.
Ladies first at Vinyl
What’s a girl’s night out without champagne and goodie bags?
Vinyl’s new monthly ladies night, “Hey, Chica,” starts tonight and will continue on the last Friday of every month. It is not designed to be a typical ladies night; this is less about cheap drinks for women and more about creating an opportunity for gals to gather and network, swap contacts, and snag free samples of girlie gifts like nail polish and spa certificates.
“Women love free stuff,” says Melissa Nowakowski, who is organizing the new monthly event and hoping to attract a crowd of women in their late 20s and early 30s.
“We don’t go out for the same reasons men go out by this age,” she says. “I want this to be a very female-friendly, positive networking opportunity.”
Head down early if you want the goods (they’ll hand them out to the first 50 women), and take advantage of the free champagne and hors d’oeuvres from 9-11 p.m. in the VIP room, which will be decked out in shades of pink for the party. And get this: Sign up when you get there for readings by an “intuitive counselor” who can advise you about family, love, or life in general. Keeping with the girl’s club idea, Vinyl (1082 Broadway) will always feature a female DJ for the events; tonight it’s DJ Colette spinning her brand of vocal house remixes.
Midweek debauchery
Get ready to get twisted at this new night.
Swing by Tryst Lounge (1512 Larimer St., 303-629-0544) on Tuesdays for an open bar 5 p.m.-midnight. The new weekly event, called “Tryst With a Twist,” sounds like a fine time, but I’m thinking the concept is sure to result in plenty of hump-day hangovers.
The night kicked off earlier this week, with an open bar featuring an array of well drinks to choose from, including all the basics from vodka and gin to bourbon and tequila. You’ll have to kick up for the cover; $10 for women and $20 for men equals access to the all-you-can-drink buffet. That’s a pretty good deal considering that most cocktails ring up around $7 at the downtown lounges. But open bars often tend to lead to excess, and excess on your average Tuesday can mean trouble when you still have to crest the midpoint of the week.
Not worried about a Wednesday morning headache? They’re advertising “harder dance beats and debauchery,” so head down on Tuesday nights and enjoy.
