Beware: It’s curfew time again for teens.

Saturday night, the annual Denver SafeNite program begins for teens 17 and younger.

The program began in 1994 in an effort to stop violence by teens and against them.

“We take them off the streets so they can be safe,” Safe Nite supervisor Tiffany Vu said.

The city’s curfew law requires that teens be off streets Friday and Saturday nights between midnight and 5 a.m. and Sunday through Thursday nights between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Teenagers caught violating curfew will be taken to the police administration building, 1331 Cherokee St.

Violators will be ticketed and given the option of joining a diversion program before being released to a parent or guardian.

Tickets can cost parents $999 for allowing their kids to stay out late. Last year, 763 kids were detained, SafeNite officials said.
